There’s no shortage of fault-finding album reviews out there for the Californian quartet but when it comes to their live shows there’s a contrasting unanimous satisfaction. Bloggers and concert patrons alike seem to have an experience that only fetches beaming appreciation. Every single song played at their sold-out concert at The Republik Thursday night elicited the shrillest of whistles and chants for songs they hadn’t yet played. You may think you know all you need to of their distinct sound from the standards played on your radio but if you haven’t had the pleasure of seeing SSPU live their energy will give you a run for your money. So don’t dare hint to them that their songs are mellow because they will (with nothing but good will) laugh in your face! Their bantering and unpretentiousness are all part of what I believe nurtures their success. You can’t not like a band that you see simply hanging out in the crowd at a Grouplove show the night before their own! Whether Brian’s playing an acoustic set alone to a handful of lucky invitees or all four are rousing a sold-out crowd their songs conjure feelings that you’re part of an intrepid saga. It didn’t surprise me to learn they all have a love for musicals or that Brian often listened to movie soundtracks back when learning to play guitar because I can hear much of their own music sooner or later serving as theme songs. Progressions transport you through a synthesized current with a trail of billowing notes. And this tidal motion advances you through the evening like an electrifying movie that, of course, leaves you longing for the sequel. They are beckoning... And still on tour in the U.S. through the end of August! Get your tickets now at: http://silversunpickups.com/tour/
